That's the whole idea of it. Nice new compact growth. Give them a
feed at the same time.


Exactly. If you want them to look spindly and not have many new leaves
or flowers don't prune.

I find shaping natives is a better way to proceed.
If you wish a view, just prune any time it suits you.
They will grow back, whether spindly or not, doesn't matter. It depends
on the types of natives. They always fill out again.
Most natives are frost tolerant, so frost is not really a worry either.
