[IBC] Trimming the Apex

How do I trim the Apex of a tree to reduce a tree in height and still leave
the apex full of foliage? Do I simply use concave cutters to trim above

the
knuckle of a fairly busy pair of branches? Should I wire other branches
upward to give the illusion that the Apex is full? Or is there a

completely
different way to trim for height and still leave a full looking apex?

If you can present the Latin (Genus and Species) for the tree, I (and
others) can advise. In bonsai, we are ALWAYS talking about "apples and oranges."

You will need to understand the growth habits of your particular tree in the
context of your design objectives. Bonsai is truly the marriage of
horticultural knowledge and artistic ability. The two in combination form the basis
of the art.

Thank you Michael,

As stated in the original message, these are Amur Maples (Acer
Ginnala).

Eliminate unnecessary branches to allow major branches to form early in its
life as a bonsai. As with all bonsai, trace the trunkline from base to top.
The branch selected for the apex will need to undergo the following
procedure.

Apex development with short branches can be accelerated by pinching away the
center bud on first shoots in the spring. These are the shoots that are
likely to produce leggy growth or long internodes. Tweezers should be used to
remove the buds as soon as they emerge. This will help you to develop a well
defined canopy. If you wait until you can use your fingers, the internodes
will already have grown too long.

You, like all of us, will make mistakes along the way. Maples are quite
forgiving.
