One of the commercial members of my orchid newsgroup really did
a controlled
experiment with SuperThrive and found that it does work.
Iris,

Did he or she write it up in any detail?

As Andy W. (and others here) have written in their experiments
(which showed no appreciable difference in plants treated with or
without it), it is extremely difficult for a lay person to create
a truly "controlled" experiment. Merely having one group of
plants treated with it and another without it doesn't cut it.

If it has been written up -- including procedures, etc. -- I
would very much like to see it.

I KNOW that despite years of horticultural folklore, Vitamin B-1
is bad for plants. S'thive allegedly contains it (certainly
smells like it does).

Lots of people are 'believers' (in a variety of things). Belief
doesn't make it a fact. (Tho in medicine, there is strong
evidence that a certain amount of belief can have a certain
amount of healing power.)

I tend (in most things) to prefer scientific evidence.

Well, I am not going to open old wounds. What I will say is that while it would appear at Superthrive has some value, I can state that Root2 liquid produces extraordinary root growth, especially when used with fast-draining soils.

If I had to choose one, it would be Roots.

Yes, but very fast draining soils alone are able to promote this kind of
growth.
Questions:
-Could you point me to any controlled experiment using roots2 or similar?
-For improve growth as a whole, there is an interest to improve root growth
if this is the limiting factor. Is it the case?

Mike Bennett 25-04-2003 10:32 PM

[IBC] Super Thrive

I'm a scientist, so like Jim I tend to want to see real hard evidence before
I'm convinced of anything. I use Superthrive because it was recommended when
I started out and I haven't had the nerve to try repotting without.

Having said that, I am pretty convinced there is something to be said for
Superthrive, but not based on anything I've seen with my bonsai.

I had a rambling rose in the garden which for two years was a pitiful sight.
In a last ditch attempt to rescue it, I tipped a bucket of water containing
superthrive on it. Within a week it looked better than it ever had
before, within 3 weeks it was blooming beautifully. The plant prior to this
had produced buds but few opened.

I did the same with a sick looking pyracantha last year and got very similar
results.

Now this isn't a controlled experiment, but in the absence of real data,
observations made on individual subjects are often the only way we can come
to any sort of conclusion.

I've seen enough to make me feel there is something in there that works,
what it is or how it does it I have no idea, and I have no idea if this can
be transferred to the types of species often seen as bonsai.

Jim is correct that Vitamin B1 may harm trees, so can anything in the wrong
amounts, even water! However at the low levels used, who is to say what the
real effect is?

Regards

Mike Bennett. UK
