The "weather guessers" here in Harrisburg are predicting mid
50's for the
foreseeable future,

That, of course, is about 10 minutes -- but they won't admit
that. ;-)

[IBC] This is winter ??

Let me point out that putting the trees in darkness may not be pertinent.

Dormancy is complicated, and varies from plant to plant, but to a large extent it is triggered by short day length in the fall, and can only be broken by a COLD PERIOD of a given duration (500-2000 hours on average). So a plant that has just gone dormant
cannot be easily brought out of it by moving it into a warm room or being subjected to light.

I'm just a couple hours away from you, and so far my trees haven't had much exposure to cold, but enough that I think they are genuinely dormant. So I wonder if your trees ever really went dormant. The problem with putting them in a shed is that they may
only have been exposed to conditions that lead to "pre-dormancy", which is easily reversed.

Of course, you want to know what to do *now*. You could do nothing; trees are often fooled into breaking bud early, and they suffer die-back, but survive.

Thanks Nina

Given your suggestions, I wonder if my trees haven't gone into dormancy yet.

"Pre-Dormancy" ???
Hmmmmmmm .....
Obviously, my trees have lost their leaves, and are being watered less
frequently, but I'm not sure they've ever experienced temps below freezing
for anything longer than one night.

If their buds begin to break .. am I (they) in trouble ??

Mark:

It sounds like my weather may be just slightly colder than yours but I
think the difference is minimal. I keep my trees outside on the deck
until typically right around Thanksgiving. Usually by then they have
had enough cold weather and shorter periods of light that they are
sufficiently dormant. About a week before Turkey day they were calling
for temps in the teens so we moved them that evening to be safe. How
early did your trees go into the shed?

One of the beauties of my unheated garage is that it is very leaky as
far as air circulation. That does sometimes mean more cold gets in but
it also provides fresh air and more importantly it guarantees the plants
don't get too hot no matter what the sun does. I keep an indoor/outdoor
thermometer running in the garage that stores the minimum and maximum
temperature. You may want to see what temps you are hitting in there to
be safe.

As we speak I actually have the garage door open to move some air around
and even out the temps. It does vary from year to year. We lost a few
plants last year that did fine the year before....so it is sort of a
guessing game.

Bill;

Thanks again.

My trees sat outside for the first few frosts, then went directly into my
lighted shed.
This was over a month ago.
They're sitting on unheated benches, that probably receive too much direct
sunlight, maybe causing them to warm up.
However, according to Nina, light really shouldn't make any difference.
Temperature seems to be the issue here.
My trees have only seen a few days of freezing temps, and that was three
weeks ago.
Since then, the temps have been far too high to keep them dormant.
In fact, right now it's 55 deg with glaring sunshine.
Conditions typical of springtime not winter.

Regards
Mark

Bil: It's hard to have too much air circulation for your trees. A
simple box fan would be a lot more effective than opening up your garage
door and letting in all the cold outside air.

We're predicted to hit near record highs here on New Year's
Day -- 72 degrees F (which is what it was here today -- but no
record). Cooler tomorrow and Wednesday.

While I was gone we had a few really cold (for here) days and the
leaves are mostly gone from all of my bonsai. The big bald
cypress in the yard was a bright orange when I left. It is
leafless now and the orange is on the ground in the garden that
grows around it. The 6-foot lantana has been frozen back to the
soil, not to be seen again until it re-sprouts in March.

Actually since the car lives in there too it's pretty hard to avoid
opening up the door at least a few times each day. I have enough leaky
windows in there to move some of the air. I tried the box fan but I
wasn't crazy about leaving it running all the time or putting it on a
timer unsupervised in a garage. Maybe that's my dad talking but so far
it hasn't been a problem, at least not one caused by poor air movement.
It is a good idea that I may have to try out, again assuming the open
door doesn't do it.

I just have my trees outside. Plenty of fresh air, and I don't have to water them.
