A passing comment on hornbeams, only slightly related to the question asked: this tree tends to grow closer to the bottom of the hill than toward the top, and expects to find moisture in its soil. This doesn't mean that you have to drown it or pretend th
at your bonsai pot is a swamp, but never let the soil dry out completely, especially in hot weather. I did once, several years ago, and lost a very promising young tree.
