tan oval flakes on back side of shefflera
leaves that flake off with fingernail scrape

Probably a scale. It not too severe an infestation use your fingernail,
other wise an approved insecticide is called for.

When mother aphid lays her eggs, she then dies. So I'd watch carefully
for a new generation of scales in about 3 weeks.
