[IBC] Trident Maple wintering

Michael,

I live just south of Cleveland, so relatively similar temps in winter. I had tridents planted in the ground with no additional protection last year. They survived just fine, BUT had quite a bit of dieback at the tops. Someone on the list (Iris, I think) suggested using rose cones as additional protection. Craig's suggestion to keep them out of the wind is probably the biggest thing if they are kept in the ground. I'm actually thinking of digging them up and storing in the garage or sunporch when the temps start threatening to go below 20.

Michael,

I find Trident Maple to be a bit tender so protecting it from hard freezes
is a good idea.

Of course and even easier approach is to dig the pot into the ground and
mulch over the rim. However, you will probably need to be in a warm
microclimate in your area for Trident to be hardy outside.

There will be much more info posted on wintering trees as winter arrives in
the Northern hemisphere and there is a great deal of information in the
archives. The latest issue of the ABS Journal has a neat article on how
folks in several different areas of the United States and Canada over winter
their trees including bits by at least one IBC member.

And, keep it out of the wind.
