In a message dated 11/16/2004 10:37:48 PM Eastern Standard Time,
writes: I believe most of the Washington cherry trees are the cultivar 'Kwanzan.' They were a gift from the people of Japan. 'Kwanzan' is hardy up to Zone 6, and is still widely sold in nurseries. However, it is somewhat disease and insect prone, and there are newer varieties which are tougher, and also more suitable for bonsai. I think I recall reading that the National Park Service grows replacements for the DC trees and replaces them as needed?
