Miracle Grow Plant Spikes
 

I've heard much about individuals using Jobes Plant Spikes in their
aquariums.......would anyone recommend using Miracle Grow Plant Spikes for
indoor plants and flowers? i'm a bit nervous testing them out. any
information appreciated. thanks

That is a BAD idea. If you do that, you will end up with dead fish, an
algae swamp, or possibly both.

The Jobe plant spikes are low in nitrogen and phosphate, which is why they
are suitable for aquaria. The Miracle-gro ones have a fair amount of both-
one is fish poison, one is algae food :)

Its all about how much you dose and how much your tank will consume.
I know several well respected people in the hobby who use or have used
regular Miracle Gro (the blue granules) directly in their planted tanks with
moderate fish loads and had no problems. I'm not saying do it - if you don't
know what you're doing you'll cause more harm than good - but it has
been done in with success.

Are you sure?

Several people have reported good results using the regular Jobe's, for
beautiful houseplants. They are 13-4-5. The Miracle Gro spikes are
6-12-6.
Lower in nitrogen, higher in phosphate.

I think it might be okay, as long as the spike is deeply buried in the
substrate. Personally, I find nitrate to be more a problem than
phosphate. My
tapwater has tons of phosphate in it, so I don't really need to add
phosphate,
but it doesn't seem to hurt anything. Fish don't seem bothered by it, and
it
doesn't cause algae problems.

The liquid Miracle Gro should definitely be avoided, since it's added
directly
to the water, but spikes... I think they might be worth a try. Just bury
them
deeply, and do not disturb the area for a month or more.

This is a totally unfounded Opinion. I use them and the work fine. You dont
get an algae swamp because their under your gravel (sand in my case) and not
in the water. Dont knock a product if you havent tried it.
