Flourish Excel as carbon source
if I remove the bagged carbon from my canister filters then what should I
put in there? I would use one of the inert media sold for filters, that are meant to grow bacteria colonies. Ceramic rings, bio-balls, pieces of sponge, etc. You can also buy various sizes of mesh bag to put it in, if your filter requires it. (Personally, I have an Eheim, and I use their media -- ceramic rings on the first layer, a gravel-looking media on the others. My other tank has an Aquaclear, and I two foam inserts, instead of the foam, carbon bag, and ammonia-removing bag it comes with.) If you replace the carbon, do it gradually, one bag at a time. Part of your biological filter may be living in the carbon. Also it seems that when I add fertalizer I get VERy rapid algae grown, like the rough green stuff shows up on my glass overnight almost. You may not have this problem with a more complete fertlizer, like TMG. FloraPride has only potassium and iron. If your plants don't have all the nutrients they need, they can't make use of the FloraPride, and the algae will. Leigh http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/halloween/881/ |

Marcus Check out our updated store with co2 equipment, lighting, live plants and more http://www.Aquatic-Store.com On Thu, 27 Feb 2003 10:07:15 -0500, "Henry" wrote: I am thinking of using Flourish Excel as a carbon source for my planted tank and have a few questions: 1) Will it cause PH fluctuations (like CO2 injection) ? 2) Other than PH, will it alter my water chemistry ? 3) Are there any issues with it that I should be aware of ? 4) Based on anyone who has tried it, how effective is it ? I will be using it (if I decide to go ahead with it) in a 30 gal tank with 60 watts of light. As a plant base I have a 50/50 mix of gravel and Fluorite. I use the other Flourish products to take care of my trace element needs. I do a bout 25% water changes weekly. Thanks for any help. |
