Taken while on vacation. Ordinarily I would think this is a female Anna's
Hummingbird but in the area the shot was made Anna's are rare and the most popular birds are Costa's, Broad-Tailed, Rufous, Broad-Billed, and Black-Chinned. I know it's not a Rufous or a Broad-Billed. I suspect she may be a Costa's or Black-Chinned. -- Paddy's Pig |

Note the longer tail with the white feather ends. That may indicate this one is a Broad-Tailed. -- Paddy's Pig |

Note the longer tail with the white feather ends. That may indicate this one is a Broad-Tailed. It's not a Broad-tailed which has buffy flanks. Where was this photo taken? Arizona? It is obviously not Broad-billed or Rufous. Black-chinned has abruptly narrower inner primaries lacking in this bird. Costa's has a much shorter bill and whiter underparts. That leaves Anna's which has expanded into Arizona in recent years and is not all that rare these days. But the bill looks very long and the bird itself quite robust. Why isn't it a female Magnificent Hummingbird? |
