About the macros I shoot: I use a Canon EOS XTi with a Tamron AF
70-300mm Macro lens...or a Tamron Adaptall MF 90mm Macro lens with a 2X
teleconverter (or Macro rings and Adaptall EOS Adapter)...or lastly a
Takumar MF 50mm Macro lens with a 2x teleconveter (& M42 Adapter). I
take all my macros pictures with a hand-held camera and no tripod...

How far is the lens from the insect, typically?

Depends on the lens. The 70-300 can't go closer than 2-1/2 to 3 feet
from the object, while the 50mm Takumar with a macro bellows can almost
touch the object. In that picture (Insect-on-Rose) I think I used the
90mm Adaptall with a 2X converter and was about a foot away...
