Default Japanese Maples in Hawaii

I have been lured by the beauty, portrayed in many books, of the
Japanese Maples, and am very interested in caring for one in my back
yard. However, I understand that the tree prefers Hardiness Zones
4-8, and that Hawaii is considered Zone 11. Has anyone in a similar
climate had any success with the Acer palmatum?
