Need help identifying two plants.

It's early May and I'm in South Jersey and have a weed and a flower I'd
like help identifying.

The first is some kind of weed that just started growing in a few places.
I was going to let it go for a while but noticed it had fine, stiff,
sharp, hairs all
along the stems so I said the heck with that baby, and dug it up. I would
still like
to know what it is.

The second is a flower (probably an annual) I purchased at a flower stand
in one
of those divided plastic plant starters. The man told me it did not like
full sun and
the name was something like terrginia or torrinia but he wasn't sure and I
can't find it
in my books.

As usual, any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Ted

Yes, you are correct! The flower certainly is Torenia fournieri.
Thank you very much.

Now I just have to get that nasty weed ID'd.

I think it may be motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca).
http://www.missouriplants.com/Pinkop...iaca_page.html

It is considered a medicinal herb and also an invasive, exotic weed.
Pops up in my yard a lot (but has recently been overwhelmed by an
even more invasive weed, garlic mustard).

Close, but motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) doesn't seem to be right. The
leaves are different
and mine has really stiff, sharp hairs that motherwort doesn't seem to
have.

But thanks. Next guess?

here's my closest guesstimation on the weed. It is probably a species
of cinquefoil. I am just not sure which species is strigose (has the
sharp hairs) It should flower by summer so this will help to identify
it. (that is, if you are determined to ID it) it will also help you to
see what kind of root structure it has.

Thanks very much for the guess, but I don't think so by the pictures I've
found.
Plus, none mention the sharp hairs which are a very strong feature.
I already said I pulled it (since I wanted to put my flowers there) so I
don't have
any to watch grow unless I go out and look around and find one growing in
a place
I can leave. That would be the most helpful (and luckiest) thing.

Someone will recognize it sometime, I'm sure.

Thanks for your time!

Ted

since no one else mentioned it, i'd say it looks like
stinging nettle. when young the spines aren't too awful, but
it requires gloves when it's more mature.
it's actually good to eat in the spring. cooking destroys the
sharp little spines.

Hi Lee.

Thanks for the guess of stinging nettle. That was very interesting and
I've found pictures of several types but nothing definite. Most of the
leaves are described as heart shaped and you can see mine are not. But it
may be in the nettle family somewhere. Great guess until something better
comes along. Thanks!
