Need help identifying two plants.
It's early May and I'm in South Jersey and have a weed and a flower I'd
like help identifying. The first is some kind of weed that just started growing in a few places. I was going to let it go for a while but noticed it had fine, stiff, sharp, hairs all along the stems so I said the heck with that baby, and dug it up. I would still like to know what it is. http://swirsky.notlong.com/misc/055unknown1.jpg http://swirsky.notlong.com/misc/057unknown1.jpg http://swirsky.notlong.com/misc/058unknown1.jpg http://swirsky.notlong.com/misc/059unknown1.jpg The second is a flower (probably an annual) I purchased at a flower stand in one of those divided plastic plant starters. The man told me it did not like full sun and the name was something like terrginia or torrinia but he wasn't sure and I can't find it in my books. http://swirsky.notlong.com/misc/073unknown2.jpg http://swirsky.notlong.com/misc/074unknown2.jpg As usual, any help is appreciated! Thanks, Ted |

Yes, you are correct! The flower certainly is Torenia fournieri.
Thank you very much. Now I just have to get that nasty weed ID'd. Ted On Mon, 08 May 2006 20:20:35 -0400, ricks555 wrote: not sure of the weed but the flower is "Torenia fournieri" also known as "Wishbone Flower" |

Pops up in my yard a lot (but has recently been overwhelmed by an even more invasive weed, garlic mustard). -- Pat in Plymouth MI ('someplace.net' is comcast) Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced. Close, but motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) doesn't seem to be right. The
leaves are different and mine has really stiff, sharp hairs that motherwort doesn't seem to have. But thanks. Next guess? here's my closest guesstimation on the weed. It is probably a species
of cinquefoil. I am just not sure which species is strigose (has the sharp hairs) It should flower by summer so this will help to identify it. (that is, if you are determined to ID it) it will also help you to see what kind of root structure it has. |

Thanks very much for the guess, but I don't think so by the pictures I've
found. Plus, none mention the sharp hairs which are a very strong feature. I already said I pulled it (since I wanted to put my flowers there) so I don't have any to watch grow unless I go out and look around and find one growing in a place I can leave. That would be the most helpful (and luckiest) thing. Someone will recognize it sometime, I'm sure. Thanks for your time! Hi Lee.
Thanks for the guess of stinging nettle. That was very interesting and I've found pictures of several types but nothing definite. Most of the leaves are described as heart shaped and you can see mine are not. But it may be in the nettle family somewhere. Great guess until something better comes along.
