Having a large flat roof instead of a yard, I have resorted to growing
potted plants instead of a traditional garden. This seems to works good
for some things but not so well for others. You definitely have to water
more often... my old traditional salsa garden seem to thrive on neglect
in comparison. Even with large pots and lots of water, my tomato plants
just don't seem to be taking off as well.

Might I do better with hydroponics? I'm tempted to try it just for the
fun learning experience, but I also hear that many plants (like tomatoes)
do much better with it. I assume there are other plants that don't
do so well? After initial setup, is it more work or less to tend a
hydroponic garden compared to potted plants?
