I once saw an interesting TV program dealing with habitat improvement
and wildlife. I came a way with the notion of having a variety of
plants not only concerned with species but also height and forms or
shapes. So we have a small lawn mostly weeds and clover and some
surviving fescue surrounded by scrubs, small bushes, small tree's and
large trees. Add to the mix a variety of perennials and deciduous and
evergreen options and the palate has a niche for all sorts of critters.
We rot wood chips for humus and compose too. Not on the scale we did
years ago though. Starting to phase out scrubs and go with Japanese
Hollies.
