See if you can identify the bleeding heart liberal who said this:

""Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired
signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not
fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not
spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the
genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Noam Chomsky? Michael Moore? Bernie Sanders? (Not from URL (Wild

Nope, it was that unrepentant lefty, five-star general Dwight
Eisenhower, in 1953, just a few months after taking office -- a time
when the economy was booming and unemployment was 2.7 percent."

For the Republican Party it has been a continuous push to the right
extreme. John Paul Stevens was a lifelong republican, imagine that now?

The former party of small government is now to pushing toward the Tea
Party belief of no government. Arguably George W Bush did his best to
break government and generally succeeded.

My thought when I read this was that lunch today was venison chili.
The venison was culled with my Remington 1100, a shotgun that has
supplied this household with lots of meals but no butter ;)

I have yet seen a newsgroup that doesn't go Off Topic, or contend with
trolls or spammers. Sometimes in our exuberance we become excessive, but
it is because of things about which we feel passionately (not to say
that I wouldn't KF Dr. Chung, if he shows up here). Both of you, FarmI
and Emily, are highly respected in this group, and your pronouncements
not lightly taken by myself. I'm sorry, if my continuing rage against
our government, and its murderous policies disturbs you. On the other
hand, we are individuals, each off whom plays our own little parts in
celebrating and furthering gardening. All in all, I think that the good
that we do, outweighs the bad.

Thank you for the criticism, because I know you want to be part of
something better. We all do.

That's hilarious! Bush presided over one of the hugest expansion of
government
in many administrations. Only he did it in the interests of his
corporate masters,
not of the people he swore to serve.

Broken government can be the most expensive kind! It doesn't cost less
but it does less.

Military-industrial complex
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

President Dwight Eisenhower famously warned the US about the
"military-industrial complex" in his farewell address.
Military-industrial complex (MIC) is a concept commonly used to refer to
policy relationships between governments, national armed forces, and the
industrial sector that supports them. These relationships include political
approval for research, development, production, use, and support for
military training, weapons, equipment, and facilities within the national
defense and security policy. It is a type of iron triangle.
The term is most often played in reference to the military of the United
States, where it gained popularity after its use in the farewell address
speech of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, though the term is applicable to
any country with a similarly developed infrastructure.
It is sometimes used more broadly to include the entire network of contracts
and flows of money and resources among individuals as well as institutions
of the defense contractors, The Pentagon, and the Congress and executive
branch. This sector is intrinsically prone to principal-agent problem, moral
hazard, and rent seeking. Cases of political corruption have also surfaced
with regularity.
A similar thesis was originally expressed by Daniel Guérin, in his 1936 book
Fascism and Big Business, about the fascist government support to heavy
industry. It can be defined as, "an informal and changing coalition of
groups with vested psychological, moral, and material interests in the
continuous development and maintenance of high levels of weaponry, in
preservation of colonial markets and in military-strategic conceptions of
internal affairs" [1]

All praise to Eisenhower, perhaps that ;ast sane president.

shooting something in the garden and then weaving in comments that apply

Don't you think that in an ng where the topic is gardening, that those of us
who come here to read about gardening might be allowed to have a bit of
freedom from American politics? Many posters here don't live in the US so
it's OTT at the very least to foist such posting on us.

On the other

celebrating and furthering gardening. All in all, I think that the good

Which is why I garden. If I want to talk about politics or guns or other
non gardening related issues, I do those in forums where that is the norm.

I usually just read the subject. If it says, say, "How to seduce a sheep",
I don't even click into it, because I have an idea what it is about, I'm no
longer interested in the subject, and don't want to read it. If I click
into a message that is titled Onion cultivation, and see that the thread
drift has taken it into a discussion about the big O, I treat it the same
way, or mark the thread, knowing it has been discussed out.

But that's just me. Some people like to bark about how Usenet should be in
a perfect world. I just adjust to the one I have.
