Gurney's and Springhill....

Has anyone had any experiences with either Gurney's or Springhill
Nursery? The reason I ask is that I recently ordered from both and
discovered something interesting. Both appear to be owned by the same
company, Scarlet Tanager, LLC which is descriebd by the Indiana Secretary
of State as a "Foreign Limited Liability Company" (although apparently
Springhill is now owned by a subsidiary of Scarlet Tanager.
Additionally, the service at Gurney's, at least in my case was
absolutely abysmal. I ordered over 35 hedge plants to create a border
between property lines, and was told they were all in stock and ready for
shipment. I waited a few days and removed what bordering hedges I had, to
get a jump on the arrival of the Gurney plants. Waiting over 10 days now, I
decided to call Gurney's to check the order status and was told they had
cancelled my order due to the items being out of stock! (Interestingly
enough, I got this information after they had confused the Gurney's order
with the one from Springhill!!) This was done with no notification even
though they had both my e-mail address and home address, in addition to my
phone. This left me in quite a predicament...until I searched my entire area
and found a local nursery with the same hedge as I required.
I don't think I shall be doing any business whatsoever with either
company in the future.
Just the rantings of a disgruntled customer...fwiw.

They also own Henry Fields Nursery and seed. The Henry Fields and
GUrneys websites are nearly identical, same format, different color
scheme. Their offerings are nearly identicial.

I ordered a clematis from HF that arrived near dead. After a few days
it completely died back to wood. I called, they shipped a replacement
without hassle and a good ones arrived within the week. The rest of
the order completed without a problem.

I think that there are two issues with Springhill. First of all, they sell
very small plants, but the catalog shows mature plants. When people get
their plants they are disappointed because they don't realize that they
would only get a three inch azalea for $6 instead of a three foot shrub.
Secondly, Springhill was owned by a company that ended up in financial
difficulties. That exacerbated the customer service problems. I live near
Springhill's facility in Ohio and find that there is a different atmosphere
now that it is under new management. I have bought some very nice plants
from them at very good prices at their yearly catalog clearance sale. My
sister has bought some plants via their mail-order operation and was
disappointed. When she notified the company that the plants were not up to
her expectations they told her to keep them and removed the charges from her
credit card. In reality, they sent her bare root plants which she thought
were dead. The who situation was the result of poor communications.

Oh, wow. Where would this outlet catalog clearance sale take place? Is it
by invitation only? How do you find out about it?

Thanks for help.
