Default newbie: grape vine pests

Hi - I bought a house a year ago with a 40 year old Concord grape
vine. When I was trimming grass around the root this past weekend, I
noticed 3 things that don't look good and I need advice.

1 - a small slug in the woody part of the trunk. (it's about 5"
around now, so it looks like a small tree trunk) 2 - lots of the
little "basketball bugs" crawling around in the trunk. 3 - a large
chunk of the trunk was dead and broke away.

What can I do to save my grape vines??

clean all the dead wood away from the trunk. paint it white (seems to repel bugs).
if the top is thriving, then the dead part isnt killing it. Ingrid
