Lilac Rejuvenation Problems...

Hi all,

I'm having a little problem rejuvenating my lilac shrubs. I'm getting new
shoots to grow without a problem, but when those shoots get about 5" tall
the top leaves curl up, turn black then seem to die off. They have been
doing that all summer. Any suggestions?
