What tree is this?

I have a tree in my yard that I've never seen before. It has large,
sharp thorns on the bark, pods that look like avocados (only larger)
and a large white "cotton ball" bloom when the pods open.

I can send a digital picture if needed.

Thank you...

Where on the planet are you and how big is your yard that you missed such an
unusual tree?

What do the leaves look like?

You may be describing a Chorisia but that is not a hardy tree and the
foliage is also distinctive.

Sounds like Chorisia speciosa to me. Common in So Cal. Pink (or
white) blooms?
