New Hosta pictures from Europe..........
Dear Garden Friends,
I'm a big fan of hostas and I have my own website with a lot of Hostapictures. I like tp come in contact with other garden friends who have Hostas in there gardens. Today I have placed a big Hosta update on my Hostavalley website with many new Hosta pictures. You can see them on my website ( www.hostavalley.com ) including a 14 new "Hostas of the week" (pictures and description) like: Allagan Fog, Heideturm, Touch of Class, Harry van der Laar, Little Red Rooster, longipes f. sparsa, Dean's Dream, Paradise Red Delight, Christmas Candy and more. You'll find over 85 "Hosta of the week" items (pictures and description) in the archives. There are pictures from Katsuragawa Beni, Magic Fire, Popcorn, Surprised by Joy, and more. I wasn't going for "rude." Not at all. Seen another way, by the
conventions of usenet, spamming a newgroup *is* rude. Since I never saw the invitation to which this person refers, it looked like just another one of those annoying attempts to pander his wares, though couched in clever, charming words. That is the basis upon which I made my remark. If you made such an invitation, I would make a simple request. Would you consider the possibility that perhaps this newsgroup is not the place for your correspondence with this business owner? Sorry, Anne, but on this one I'd agree with Byers. A quick search
shows there were no emails from hostavalley 'a few weeks ago' and therefore no 'kind emails' on this list. It's spam, pure and simple.. Though it probably does no good for Byers or anyone to try communicating with hostavalley via this list, kindly or rudely--s/he probably sent out hundreds of such messages, and now just waits for orders. If it is garden related and only an occassional spam I kind of tolerate

Jeroen has posted here before. Yes, it was before "a few weeks ago" -- more like a few months -- and no, I can't find his posting in Google. But I went to his site then and I went to it when he posted the other day. I confess I don't speak Danish, so perhaps that's why I'm missing the purchase information from this "business owner," who has yet to solicit any "business" here except invite people to look at pictures of a lot of hosta. Do please be so kind as to show me where on his site I can place an order, in English, for delivery to the USA. Yes, his single post last week -- his first in quite some time -- went to a lot of groups in a lot of languages. It was also on-topic, succinct and in the proper language for each group. Personally, I've found his site quite useful as I try to choose something to put in the shady parts of my yard. Ah, this discussion has yielded a kernel of useful corn at last. How appropriate, how on-topic for a gardening group. What we have revealed, of course, is the magic of spam. Spammers know it's a numbers game, that those millions of eyes belong to all sorts of people, and some portion of the population will always be rather too credulous; some portion also will lack a firm grasp of cause and effect. Mail and news servers are groaning under the load of millions of spam messages. Encourage the spammers if you like, but remember that even seemingly innocuous actions can have far-reaching consequences. And oh, yes, in the spirit of "nicey nice," have a fabulous day! Apologies for weighing in with an uninformed opinion.
I did not go check out hostavalley when I responded, because it looked like spam mail. (I'm perhaps hypersensitive because I get SO much spam mail.). Some might still define the original hostavalley post as spam, if indeed it sent out the same message about "kind emails"to many newsgroups. But after seeing the emotional back & forth, I went and looked. I could not find any indication from the hostavalley site that the owner was trying to SELL anything. Perhaps the owner does sell some hostas, and that's fine, but the site seems to be mainly for the purpose of sharing information and photos among hostaphiles, internationally. It would be better to just send out a generic message inviting people to visit a URL--and to be clear about whether the site is commercial, simply informational, or both. Anyway, the owner Jeroen seems to be a genuine, impassioned young plant breeder in Holland. Best wishes to him. Sue |
