Question about vanilla!
Hello everyone!
I have a piece ( stem ) of Vanilla Plenifolia rooting in water and I was wondering what kind of media to use? Anyone tried the S/H? Any Vanilla growers out there? thanks Claude -- |
Question about vanilla!
It doesn't really need medium -- just something to climb. If you are in a
tropical climate, just tie it to the base of a tree. Otherwise, make a good-size trellis [largest that you can move in to protect for winter], and try to train it to grow around rather than straight up -- planifolia grows FAST once it gets started! V. pompona is slower growing, but more cold-tolerant -- ours [growing up a pine tree] was set back, but not killed, by a couple of near-freezes last winter. V. planifolia will not tolerate that much cold. -- Kenni Judd Juno Beach Orchids http://www.jborchids.com "Claude" wrote in message ... Hello everyone! Thanks Kenni!
I live in Montreal sol I will have to grow it indoor! What are the best condition? I grow under fluorescent but I was thinking to suspend my Vanilla beside my Hoya Bella, in front of my South window! Well, that sounds like good light for now, but what are you going to do with
it when it starts really growing? My first grew about 30' [yes, that's feet not inches -- about 10 metres if you're on metric] in one season; of course, the first major cold snap "solved" that problem for me :( -- Kenni Judd Juno Beach Orchids http://www.jborchids.com "Claude" wrote in message ... Question about vanilla!
Claude: My initial point was, it really doesn't matter too much what you
put in the pot, because that's not where most of the plant and its roots are going to be. Roots form near each pair of leaves, and they need something to climb. When we put them on trees, we don't bury any portion of the plant itself, we just set the base of the vine very close to the ground so that it "looks" planted. For you: Plant a trellis in a good-size pot [8" or better] -- wooden trellis, or I guess you could strap some treefern totems together to make a trellis -- or maybe set a long piece of freshwater driftwood on a stand -- in something reasonably heavy [otherwise, the vine on the trellis is going to get top-heavy and start falling over]. Then mount the vanilla on the trellis or driftwood. Good growing, Kenni "Claude" wrote in message ... Hello! 30 feet in one season !!! Wow! Question about vanilla!
We put our Vanilla cutting in a ten inch pot with sphagnum. We used a series
of coconut fiber poles - that reached about 6 feet or so. It is in our plant room and it grew past the poles and started growing on the walls. It reached the ceiling (9 ft) and is now growing across the ceiling. It seems happy, but has yet to bloom. I have heard various stories about what it takes to bloom - it must start growing "down," it must be 20 feet long, etc, but have not heard any definitive answers. The fact that it has not bloomed does not bother our children. The fact that it is Vanilla and is growing on the ceiling "IN THE HOUSE" makes them think it is very cool and gives them bragging rites with their friends... John "Kenni Judd" wrote in message ... Question about vanilla!
I just start my vanilla out in standard potting mix for regular plants or a
terrestrial orchid mix , as they usually start out terrestrial and become an epiphytic vine. Good luck ! Todd "Claude" wrote in message ... Hello everyone! Question about vanilla!
Pampano is slower? could have fooled me.
I am a docent at the atlanta botanical gardens where they have several pleni. I have a pompano at home and it has grown at least twice as fast as the pleni. There is a lot of good info from the comercial grower in Hawai, Doctor Young? (cant remember his name) I have the info at home.I will try to remember to get it when I get a chance. Vanilla grow both ways terest. and not. Everything I read said plant it in medium. (I have seen them growing in dirt, soilless mix, bark, etc...mine at home is in bark and soiless mix with lots of perlite and it has a root ball about 8 inches in diameter.) I planted mine in a huge pot and tied two sections of tree fern pole together for it to climb witch it did in the first year. Then I started to loop it over and over and over... (supossed to make it bloom more) I got my piece at 18 inches three years ago it is now over 28 feet long. NOOK Hello everyone! Question about vanilla!
V. pompona is slower than planifolia for me, here in south Florida. [20'
in 2 years for the former, 35' in less than a year for the latter]. Your mileage may vary. Or perhaps you are taking better care of your pompona, at home, than the gardens are of their planifolia. The cold-tolerance difference, I doubt would vary. -- Kenni Judd Juno Beach Orchids http://www.jborchids.com "NOOK" wrote in message ... Pampano is slower? could have fooled me.
