Default Lysosome in Plants

I'd like to know if plant cells can ever have any lysosome. Please
tell me, because I usually think that animal cells are the only ones
which have lysosomes.

Good question, thanks for asking!
[i.e., I didn't know the answer]

Apparently, plant cells and other eukaryotic cells do
have lysosomes as well as do animal cells:

http://sun.menloschool.org/~cweaver/cells/e/lysosomes/

"Discovered in 1950 by Rene de Duve, a lysosome is a tiny
organelle found in all eucaryotic cells."

http://www.britannica.com/nobel/micro/362_58.html

"lysosome, subcellular organelle that is found in all
eucaryotic cells and is responsible for the cell's digestion
of macromolecules, old cell parts, and microorganisms. "

http://www.iscid.org/encyclopedia/Lysosome

"Lysosomes are small organelles found in plant and animal
cells"

On the other hand, sites like:

http://biology.about.com/library/weekly/aa031600b.htm

say things like:

"The main differences between plant and animal eukaryotic
cells are that plant cells contain cell walls, glyoxysomes
and plastids, while animal cells do not. Animal cells
contain centrioles and lysosomes which are not found in
typical plant cells."

http://www.millerandlevine.com/ques/lysosomes.html
[which you should read]

also indicates that there is some controversy here.

[in answer to: "Do plant cells contain lysosomes?"]
"You've put your finger on a messy little squabble among
plant biologists that has gone on for years.

Current evidence suggests that "YES," some plant cells
do contain lysosomes."

http://www.google.com/search?q=lysosome+%22plant+cell

will no doubt find you additional information.

Hope this helped.

cheers

Thanks. Yes, I'm aware that there's some controversy here (I had one
with my teacher.)
