Default Critical size for microenvironment.

I have some agapanthus growing in a rocky and
gravel area, but they seem to get bigger
every year.

Assumably they attract dust and debris and so
make their own soil. Is this true of all
plants in that if one has a sufficient number
then they tend to make the best of their
surroundings?
