Grapes. It's a byproduct of winemaking (argol).

Cream of tartar, potassium bitartrate, is a byproduct of wine production. The
scientific name of the plant is Vitis vinifera, although some grape varieties
are hybrids with other grape species.

Another good thing to know is that Pasteur discovered the principle of
stereochemistry
as a result of his studies of tartaric acid for the wine industry. Search Google
for pasteur tartaric to find more details.

Other miscellany: It is an ingredient of baking powder and is used in beating
egg white for meringue. Because it is made from grapes, it requires supervision
in order to be kosher.
