I think I saw my koi and goldfish spawning this morning. A lot of tail
flipping near the surface. The last few mornings the pond has been covered with white foam and looks almost oily. Would that be from the spawning? Water feels and smells ok, so I don't think it is anything unnatural. Carolyn |

Splashing and white foam are pretty good indications. Have you enough

Two things trigger spawning, increasing temperature in the pond and fresh water.

Sometimes I even see cuts on their heads. They will start at sunup and stop right before sundown. By then the pond is a mess of foam and froth and has a distinct "fishy" aroma. We did do a partial water change by emptying our rain barrels. Plus we have
had rain lately. There isn't a whole lot of cover for the babies because we just redid the pond this spring. The pond is filled with rocks so I am thinking there will be crevices for them to hide. While on the subject of spawning -
I have a small pond that has only one goldfish in it (as well as a bunch of mosquito fish). This poor little guy (he is probably 2.5") is frantically trying to swim up the output hose of my water pump. The reason he is the only one in the pond is last year he chased the other 2 out of the pond to their demise. None of my other fish do this. So do I put this guy in the big pond with the much larger fish and hope they keep him in line, do I add other fish to the smaller pond or do I just wait for the guy to wear himself out and hopefully not do too much damage to himself before then? Unfortunately I can't find the time to read those thousands of pages of information - and it has to have something to stick to when you are taking it in. When I'm not programming, potting, making glazes, gardening, cleaning a house (which is an adventure with son home for a month), etc. I'm reading through here and clayart to pick up the bits that will stick. One of the reasons this room is so great is that you get condensed info, that is to the point. I don't 'raise' fish. I threw in some feeder fish over a decade ago to keep the mosquitoes down. They are still with me. Right now I am dependent on what you all throw at me. What I know about ponds I have picked up in here. My first filter was the store bought variety and it was awful. Every week the water flow would drop to a drip and I would be hosing it clean. I learned from here NOT to rinse it out with hose water but to use pond water. That improved things once the critters got growing but it still was a lot of work. I then learned in here about lava rock in a bucket with your pump. That is what I have been using ever since and while I don't have crystal clear water all of the time my plants and fish are quite happy with what I have. The raccoons used to regularly tear up my pond and kill my fish. I learned from here that if you take the sides of your pond straight down they can't get in to make messes and will leave things alone. I haven't had raccoon problems since reshaping my ponds with this design. When I retire and if I can afford someone to dig me a hole of a size big enough to have koi then I will push myself into learning about fish and I will still be woefully ignorant compared to most of those who know about fish here. Now that I have spent way to much time rambling I must get back to work (spent all morning getting the house back to livable, took care of cats and dog, now must face debugging programming code... I would so rather be reading about fish or throwing some pots). Donna |

Donna, the larger goldfish will handle it just fine going from a shady pond
