Shutting the ponds down for winter
Today I shut the pumps and filters down on all the 150 gallon kiddy pools of
gold fish. All were cleaned and put away for the winter. The circulator pump on the 600 gallon koi tank was shut off. I'll leave the filter running until the water temperature drops down to 50, it was 52F this morning. I'll be running a 300W heater in this tub most of the winter. They're down to one feeding a day. As soon as the water hits 50F I'll stop feeding them altogether. As for the koi and goldfish fry. There have been no deaths since the late frost last spring killed some of them. A few small GF got themselves caught in the sponge filters and were killed. The koi fry seemed a bit smarter and stayed away from the filters. All young fish are going into the winter fat and sassy with a good chance of surviving the cold. -- Reel McKoi.... frugal ponding since 1995...
