White Grubs...

I need to find a fish safe treatment for White Grubs ...
they have trashed my neighbors yard and are working on mine.

My neighbor is an excellent fellow and has told me he will not
spray if I can find a fish safe way to get rid of them.

Please don't say "Get a Skunk" we've been trying that and they
only do a half assed job.

I have had moderate to excellent success with them and I am in very
infested area, ps use lots of water on your lawn if restrictions are
not in place they don't like being damp all the time.

A white grub is a larva (I don't remember of what) about 1"
long and 1/4" around. The flickers love to find them in my
yard.

The size of the grub is determined by what kind of bug it will be....I have
found them while digging in my yard that were larger than a mans thumb!! Jerri

Thanks all!

Unfortunately the Milky Spore is not yet approved for use around
here... and the nematodes will be about $80 for enough to cover
our two lawns..

ah well until I can figure out just how illegal it will be to
import the milky spore (1) I'll have to drop the cash.

(1) mostly a joke but you never really know.

They're the larva of the June beetle (those big stupid ugly brown
things that stun themselves flying into porch lights). The grub is a
white fat "worm" up to an inch long, which is found just below the
soil surface. It eats grass roots. If you can stand to dig them up
yourself, I'm sure they make a great treat for your fish (I have a
number of garden pests that I hand-pick and feed to the fish -- *very*
satisfying feeling ;-).

In addition the biological controls already mentioned, I recommend
growing something other than grass -- a monoculture just begs to have
a pest come and eat it. Adding clover seed is good place to start
(but the general stupidity of the whole idea of the modern lawn is a
whole other hobby-horse which I won't ride here ;-).

The big thing I'm worried about this year is West Nile Virus -- not
that I'll get it (I think the health scare is overblown) but that
backyard ponds may be perceived as mosquito breeding grounds, and we
may need to do some fast talking to escape being sprayed or whatever.

Where I live the grubs are usually about 3/16" to 1/4" in diameter and
3/4" to 1" long. They are the larval stage of Japanese beetles. My
only complaint with the skunks is I wish they would replace the divots
when they're done.

Don't know about Milky Spore, but most things that'll kill the grubs
will do in earthworms, too.
Just FYI.
