Default pH is too high

I've been scratchin' my head, too. I am *acutely* aware of what rain can do
to pH, and it's mostly to drop the bottom out of it! The only thing I can
imagine at this point: was any work done recently to the pond, rockwork,
etc. that may be leaching with the direct exposure to the rain run-off? If,
indeed, the pH went UP, and it wasn't a matter of misreading the test
results, then outside influences are at work.

My pH was above 9 when the pond was scrubbed clean and refilled - something
to do with fresh/new water, CO2, my air manifold, etc. The fish are OK at
that point (low 9's). But then the rains came and it dropped to the mid 7's
overnight. Thank heavens for baking soda! I keep my KH ~ 200 (12 drops),
which keeps the pH rock solid at 8.2 AM/8.4 PM. When the KH drops to 180 or
so (10 drops), I add more BS. It's the only way I can guarantee pH
stability.

But that still doesn't answer why his pH went UP with rain . . .
