Default filters........ homemade ? sand filter conversion?

LAST time I had a pond was 15 yrs ago.. probably 1500 gallons,, it was
homemade fiberglass ( was interesting making this). we used a pool sand
filter, & had no problems with water etc..

but then,,,,, we never heard of ALL the stuff there seems to be you need to
check on, that I have read in the past week!! like bio filters, veggie
filters.... ph , acid,, etc etc.. ( I wonder how we ever had a pond
running!!??)

ok, now, I have searched some of your pages, & the web & am trying to find
some good simple examples of home made bio-filters, etc...
ALSO... I had read that pool sandfilters ,, aren't GOOD for ponds,, ( ok,
huh(?) , since we used it ok for years),, is there anything that we can put
inside in place of the sand??? that is CHEAP??? ( I called one place that
had some kind of material,, & it would cost over $400!!!).

TIA!!!

Sand filters can be used. See http://www.bestpondfilters.com/ for their
method of using a sand filter. The stories that I have heard about sand
filters, and I believe it is so, is that the biofilm glues the sand grains
together and the backwash is not sufficient to break up the sand cake. My
daughter has a sand filter for her swimming pool and it will cake and start
to channel, giving very poor filtration, and it is not subject to the high
levels of biological activity since it chlorinated. The bead filters work
in reverse with the filter media floating, it is fairly easy to break up the
bead pack. It also has larger grain size, so it does not take as high
pressure a pump.
