I was in Wal Mart yesterday, saw a shubkin that was white with just a bit of
yellow, I was about to buy it but noticed it's gills were kind of
reddish...Is there something wrong with this fish or is that normal?

Shubunkins sometimes have a semi-transparent gill cover, so they appear
to have dark red gills even when they're healthy. Best way to be sure
would be to gently catch the fish and gently lift the gill cover. All of
our shubunkins had the semi-transparent gill covers and they were very
healthy -- finally had to relocate all of them because they were
out-breeding and out-eating the koi.
