I know some of you will think I'm just kidding due to my recent run-ins with
the raccoon but this is serious - no kidding. Yesterday I was at Petco and was talking to the guy in the fish department and I mentioned I had a pond. He tells me that he used to but gave it up due to being constantly trashed by the raccoons. So I mentioned to him that I had 4 visits from coons in the last week and I was thinking of trading in the goldfish and koi for 200 4" piranhas to remedy the problem. (OK I can't help it - just kidding about that part). So he tells me I should get some coyote urine...that if it was available when he had the problem, he's probably still have his pond. For a second I thought HE was kidding and I said, "You said coyote urine?" He said that they sell it across the street at Green Thumb Nursery. So I went over there and bought an 8 oz bottle plus a couple of dispensers. Last night was the first time I used it and didn't have a visit - coincidence? I don't know but I had to try it even if it was $16. Anybody else hear of it? And it IS actual 100% pure coyote urine, not some chemical (according to them). I'll take their word for it. Okay. I gotta ask. How *do* they 'harvest' it? When in doubt, go to the website! Not only can you get Coyote urine but Fox, Bobcat, Wolf and Mt. Lion (!!!) Website says "All urines are collected naturally from domestically raised animals on farms that are controlled by appropriate state and federal agencies" I can't imagine naturally collecting a urine sample from a Mt. Lion. Mt. Lions occasionally eat people in our area of the country. k30a |

Yeah, that's what I asked too - everybody I asked said they didn't know and
didn't want to. *LOL* I just hope I don't trade a raccoon problem for a coyote problem and other coyotes are actually ATTRACTED to the scent! That's probably how they sell the mountain lion urine.:-) BK "K30a" wrote in message ... bobkiely wrote And it IS actual 100% pure coyote urine Okay. I gotta ask. How *do* they 'harvest' it? Well you know, I've heard that when the raccoon smells bottled coyote urine
they laugh themselves to death at the thought of a coyote being forced to pee in a bottle. ;o) Keep us posted if it keeps working and how often you have to re-apply. For $16 you should have gotten the whole coyote! It is supposed to
work if there are coyotes in your area. The coon may just think it is cheap cologne if it does not recognize it as a predator. I looked out this morning to one furry bandit in a Hav-a-heart. OOOPS! Did I say the P word? Sorry, I was upset and I think it has
been a long time since there has been a coyote at the New Jersey shore so I don't think the odor would say predator to the raccoons. #2 is now sharing a waterfront condo with #1 at a local state park. Has anyone tried putting a bunch of mouse traps around their ponds? They
helped me scare the coons away, and I haven't found any squirrel paws or bird beaks in them, so they don't seem to be hurting the local fauna. |

I've heard of putting upside down mousetraps around the pond to scare herons. Tell more about your experience. Did you hear them when they encountered the traps? -- (@#$%%!@#*&!!!!!! ;-) Did you find traps that had been tripped? When they left did your traps stay untripped later on? k30a |

I thought about that - in fact I was almost out the door to buy a dozen of
them when I realized that even though I haven't see froggy for about 6 weeks now, being he was my favorite creature in the pond, I'd hate to find him stuck in a mouse trap. That's when I came up (with what someone named) , "The MacGuyver electric COON-B-Q". BK "EliezerE" wrote in message ... Has anyone tried putting a bunch of mouse traps around their ponds? I found them tripped in the morning several times, and then they pretty much
were left alone and remained untripped, unless there was a heavy rain, which did trip them. My plants have been left alone since I put them out. Theyre pretty ugly, though. I was thinking of spray painting them a decorator black. And I have to take them in whenever there might be children around. |

I wonder if now the raccoons have been scared off if you could leave them tripped and not have the hassle of worrying about taking them in when children are around... On the other hand that would be a sign for Murphy's Law to kick in and *new* family of raccoons would show up... k30a |

Long message warning : ] This is so funny, because I posted on
alt.garden.pond.chat about my raccoon problem a few days ago.. First time I've been on Ngroups in a while. I was perusing the articles there, and saw - where is everyone?- and it suggested this site, so with contined no response, I thought I'd check here. Well, here I am- first looksie, and I see this long thread about raccoons! My very problem! Well, there hasn't been any response to my query on alt.garden. so I hunted around town and found a water garden nursery, and guess what they suggested -- COYOTE URINE! I paid $17, normally 19. I haven't tried it yet, because, well, frankly, it is weird. we've had lots of jokes, and I'm a bit scared of attracting real coyotes (who used to live in this area- & prob still do a few miles away). The nursery's other suggestion: get rid of water hyacinth- the only plant coons are attracted to. So I did an experiment, and last night the raccoons decimated my bowl with hyacinth in it in the backyard, and swiped a water lily flower from the wkiskey barrel in front yard, but no other damage. So, you might also try removing your hyacinths "bobkiely" . I feel better about the coyote urine now. I guess I'll give it a try and buy some more fish (the coons had gobbled all my fish and turned over 2 plants in my newly set up whiskey barrel!) Any tips for leaky barrels besides a stiff ugly liner? I'll try the mouse traps too. B-infoseeker |

Hey Hank,
My raccoon family (on their 2nd attack) ate only the water lily bud- but no overturned pots. I don't have fish yet again (total all you can eat buffet). I wonder if they are attracted to the lily flowers. They also totally ruined an experiemental pot with water hyancith (I was told coons like it). So I wonder if lily's should also be on that list. Sheesh! Before eating the hyacinths again, they hadn't come around for a few days, which makes me wonder if they only "hit" every few night or so. Or, they were stuffed after eating my fish and parts of plants, and needed a few days breather. So, I'm sympathizing with you! B "Hank Pagel" wrote in message ... OOOPS! Did I say the P word?
