Slow growing plants
After losing a few fish early in the year it is now evident that the water lettuce in one of my gardens is the same size it was in June when introduced. The anacharis has barely grown and the water lily has just now produced flowers. The water is crystal clear with no obvious explanation since I have no exotic filter or UV light. Am I looking at chemical condition here? The PH measured 7.8 a few days ago. By contrast, the other garden has anacharis spreading all over the surface and the lettuce is growing but not as fast as previous years. The water lily was slow growing as the other one. PH in this one is 7.6. Several new fish introduced did not last long. Anyone have some ideas? Vince |

SNIPPAGE Maybe a lack of trace elements? Have you tried muriate of potash, for starters? NJ |

muriate of potash, for
starters? Sounds exotic to me. Never even heard of it. What is the purpose? Vince |

What is the water lettuce missing if my WH is nice and green but the edges of
my WL are turning yellow. All other plants look great. Karen Zone 5 Ashland, OH http://hometown.aol.com/kmam1/MyPond/MyPond.html My Art Studio at http://members.aol.com/kmmstudios/K....M.Studios.html for email remove the extra extention |

Hi, Karen-- I had this problem all pond season, and the potash didn't do anything to assist in greening the lettuces, nor did a trace element mixture. I ended up finding clouds of little black gnats over all the lettuces as well as some amongst the leaves. I think they were the culprits. Take a good look at your plants and see if the bugs are camping out in yours, too. NJ zone 5b |

These lettuce came from a friends pond and were the most beautiful shade of green, growing babies on babies all still attached. Her pond is shaded and mine is in full sun, I think maybe??? they're getting sunburned? Anyone have beautiful WL in full sun? I don't know how beautiful, but I have large lettuce. The heads are about
15 to 18 or more inches across and would be larger, except they are so crowded in the veggie filter. They are in full sun. You can see pictures on my web page listed below. -- RichToyBox http://www.geocities.com/richtoybox/pondintro.html "Karen Mullen" wrote in message ... I grow mine in the final filter before the water goes back into the pond, hoping that it will take a lot of the nitrates out of the stream. I add potash every few weeks, and an occasional bit of liquid iron, because I don't think they are as green as I would like either, but they grow like crazy, I give a lot away, compost some, and rarely find any of the small lettuce that the stores sell. -- RichToyBox http://www.geocities.com/richtoybox/pondintro.html |

What part of the country are you in, Virginia? When I was in Houston, I had no trouble growing WL or WH, also had a steady Ph of 8.7 without doing anything and the WL would grow dinner plate size, so I guess it's what's not in the water here that's giving me grief. Don't think I'll do anything about it this year, but next year I might try the iron and see if that makes a difference.
