Waterfalls Question
We just finished our new waterfalls using Great Stuff expanding foam to seal the cracks, it worked great, thanks to everyone in the group for the helpful advice. Now my question, we are looking for a way to diffuse the incoming water supply for the falls, it is fed by a 2 inch return line (1650 imp.gallons) from my bio filter and at present it shoots out past the 2 upper most tiers of the falls. Anyone else encountered and conquered this ? -- The Courages |

Put a flat slate over the top of the return line about 1/2 inch or so to
cause the water to diffuse. The easiest way to get away from the "shooting water" look is to have your
filter feed a collecting pool at the back of your waterfall, -this way your "pool" fills and then overflows down your flagstone steps - the "pool" doesn't have to be large - mine holds maybe 2 gals and I pump ~ 1600 gph into it Gale :~) We just finished our new waterfalls using Great Stuff expanding foam to seal the cracks, it worked great, thanks to everyone in the group for the helpful advice. Excellent idea, maybe a small plastic bucket, the kind with the pour spout

Might I suggest a larger pipe. My waterfall is fed from a 1600GPH into a 1.25" pipe. I installed a 4" pipe on up a bit. This reduces the pressure so that it doesn shoot out, it pours out. I don't have enough room for a decent pool at the top. My solution was to arrange several rocks right in the path of the discharge to "tame" and spread the water before it reaches the outcrop. When I built my very first pond, I had the same problem. I made a "manifold"
of sorts: a Tee off the feeder line, with two lengths of PVC, capped at the ends. I drilled the PVC to give holes for the water to escape, but now - instead of coming out of one hole (fast!) it came out of two dozen holes (much more slowly). Further to the above, make sure the holes are drilled on what will be the

M.S.Kraft That is the solution no matter how it is implemented. Remember that whatever amount of water your pump pumps that same amount will flow over your waterfall and/or in your stream. If the flow path is narrow the water will flow quickly. If the flow path is wide, the water will flow slowly. Putting barriers in the way of the water usually forces it to flow around the barrier in a narrow channel which will result in fast flow. Providing a wide channel will result in slower flow. John |
