Nymphaea lotus low temperature
 

I've done the web search and it looks like everybody read the same
book regarding this plant, but didn't tell me what I wanted to know.

What is the temperature that the plant will survive in a dormant state
to recover when the water warms again?

Is your lotus a hardy one? If so, it should winter over in Zone 4.
The only thing you have to worry about is Not to let the tuber
freeze.

Actually Nymphaea lotus is a waterlily, not a lotus, that's just its
name. It is a tropical night-bloomer. It is used as an aquarium
plant as well as a pond plant.

I knew something didn't seem right in the first LATIN word
but typically I plowed on ;-)

A tropical waterlily does have to be taken inside or replaced
each year here in zone 6.

It is rather confusing.

According to the web site I am in zone 8-10, a lot of help. Probably
this year it would count as 10, my pond temp is 56 F. (rub it in?)

The books and web sites I have found discuss temperatures about 70 F
for growing conditions, what I hope to find is the survival
temperature, or maybe it is the same?

I'm is So. Calif. This is the second year that it hasn't gotten cold
here, I still have impatiens in the ground that were planted in 2002.
I don't like cold, ice and snow. I know some people do, and they are
welcome to my share.

From my experience it depends on the tropical.

I bring my tropical water lilies inside (Zone 7), so far I've had good luck
with Albert Greenburg, Evelyn Randig and Red Flare wintering well in
62-65F. Last year I tried Dauben, Tina and Wood's White Knight and they did
not come back. This year I put a heater in set at 70F, hoping the newest
one, Blue Capensis, would suvive. It was looking good till we lost power
and my little indoor pond dropped to 55*F. Albert, Evelyn & Red were not
fazed.

Do you know the common name for your T.lily? ~ jan

One book says the N. 'Juno' is considered to be N. lotus, and that N.
'Trudy Slocum' is a selection of 'Juno.'

I am getting a bit less sure of the identification as I look more, I
am sure it is a Nymphaea, but it could be N. maculata. Maybe when/if
it blooms I can get a better idea.

In north carolina, supposedly zone 8 every tropical water lily left
out has been dead and gone when the water temperatures get to lower
than 50°f. Pond water temperatures dont get lower than 40°f but by
then the tropicals have long gone...

Not sure I understand this. I am presently growing the plants in
tropical aquariums, and they are doing well. I am thinking to add
them to the pond and want to know how warm the water must be before I
do that. The pond has been running about 56F lately, but cold could
still come to visit. I don't remember if I mentioned it, these plants
are sold as dry tubers in the Wal-Mark aquarium section, they hang on
pegs with the artificial plants. They are also selling dry aponegeton
tubers.
