Just completed building a skippy filter. Has anyone tried using an
evaporative cooler pad for the filter media? Good results? Or a
reason not to?

What are you using? I hate to spend $125 for commercial floor
scrubber pads if I don't have to. What are you using and what do you
find to be effective?

Thanks!

Check out your local Home Depot for a product called "Cobra vent".
It comes in 11.8"(299mm) wide X 20'(6.1m)long X .75"(19mm)thick roll.
It is a non woven matrix of polyester fibers bonded together.
I have used it in all of my filters and pumps, for a year now, with no
side effects. It is really stiff and easily washes out.

Some info on the product:

Chemicals to inhibit mold & bacteria growth?

How big is your filer??? I ordered some 19" scrubber pads 5/$19. And
they seem to be working pretty well. The actual "skippy" design did not
work for me so I ran the intake into the bottom of the stock tank, got
GREAT circular flow and reduced the amount of PVC pipe and 90 degree
angles and all. I had not thought of Cobra material. If it has no
chemicals give it a whirl.

I have used the "Cobra" roof vent material for over a year now:
1. As a prefilter for my 1500 GPM pump
2. As dividers between different size biomedia in my Tetra PF-3 Filter.

with no ill affects or breakdown of the fibers.

I checked their web and MSDS sheet for info on "Cobra vent" and found no
mention of any use of any type of mold inhibitor or any other dangerous
chemicals

It is a biological filter made from a rubbermaid tank. Basically an upflow
filter. Skippy had the plans on skippysstuff.com. He passed away and his
site is now down. Maybe somebody copied his pages?
Lot of people tried his filter. I made one myself but modified it somewhat.

Hi All!

A special thanks to Mike for his cobra vent idea. It had to be
special ordered from Home Depot so we picked it up at a roofing supply
company. Sunday will be two weeks since we installed it and it is
really doing the trick...definitely made a believer of us regarding
the filter material and the skippy filter itself.

I now have another question. Has anyone tried "Mosquito Dunks"
http://www.marchbiological.com/L/mosquito_control.html in their skippy
filter and/or pond. If so, any detrimental effect on the bacterial
filtering system? Would you advise not using them? I ask this
because we have covered our stock tank with a clear sheet of
plexiglass. Looking through the plexiglass we see tiny mosquitoes and
don't want to contribute to the West Nile problem in this area.

Thanks!

Mosquito dunks are fine for ponds and with West Nile in some communities you
can never be too 'safe' as some people will never believe a fish pond can be
without mosquitoes so you'll be safe from busybodies turning you in.
The larva or insects you are seeing under the plexiglass could be any number of
other insect larva as 5,000 different insects spend part or all of their lives
in water.

here is a good picture of mosquito larva
http://www.characin.com/carey/journa...-larva_800.jpg
The key to IDing them is that they must spend all their time at the surface in
order to breath which is why they like stagnant, fishless water. Others types
of larva have gills, usually at their hind ends, and don't have to hang out on
the surface.
