Skippy Filter
Just completed building a skippy filter. Has anyone tried using an
evaporative cooler pad for the filter media? Good results? Or a reason not to? What are you using? I hate to spend $125 for commercial floor scrubber pads if I don't have to. What are you using and what do you find to be effective? Thanks! |

Repost of 5/22 post Check out your local Home Depot for a product called "Cobra vent". It comes in 11.8"(299mm) wide X 20'(6.1m)long X .75"(19mm)thick roll. It is a non woven matrix of polyester fibers bonded together. I have used it in all of my filters and pumps, for a year now, with no side effects. It is really stiff and easily washes out. How big is your filer??? I ordered some 19" scrubber pads 5/$19. And
they seem to be working pretty well. The actual "skippy" design did not work for me so I ran the intake into the bottom of the stock tank, got GREAT circular flow and reduced the amount of PVC pipe and 90 degree angles and all. It had to be special ordered from Home Depot so we picked it up at a roofing supply company. Sunday will be two weeks since we installed it and it is really doing the trick...definitely made a believer of us regarding the filter material and the skippy filter itself. I now have another question. Has anyone tried "Mosquito Dunks" http://www.marchbiological.com/L/mosquito_control.html in their skippy filter and/or pond. If so, any detrimental effect on the bacterial filtering system? Would you advise not using them? I ask this because we have covered our stock tank with a clear sheet of plexiglass. Mosquito dunks are fine for ponds and with West Nile in some communities you can never be too 'safe' as some people will never believe a fish pond can be without mosquitoes so you'll be safe from busybodies turning you in. The larva or insects you are seeing under the plexiglass could be any number of other insect larva as 5,000 different insects spend part or all of their lives in water. here is a good picture of mosquito larva http://www.characin.com/carey/journa...-larva_800.jpg The key to IDing them is that they must spend all their time at the surface in order to breath which is why they like stagnant, fishless water.
