I have not used my Aquadyne without a prefilter, but when I started the bead
filters several years ago, I was using only a BBF-2 and the fine slits cut
in the inlet pipe clogged with pieces of algae and other plant debris, and
was hard to backwash it out. I have since used some form of prefilter, mats
in the skimmer, vortex filters for the bottom drains with hardware cloth
over the vortex exit to keep frogs out of the plumbing and pumps. I now
have a BBF-2 and an Advantage 15000 for my larger pond and an Aquadyne 4.4
on the smaller pond.
