Default Supersoil

Although the name sounds really great, 'Supersoil' bought at home
depot is horrible awful crappy stuff. It is a fraud. Don't even
consider buying it. It is mostly uncomposted wood chips and is
actually detrimental to your plants. It sucks nitrogen out of the
soil in order to decompose the wood.

I was curious about this. I've used Supersoil religiously for decades; its
silica content seemed to help mightily with all-around planting needs from
rooting to permanent container gardening. It was quick draining and not
given to excess moisture retention, in my experience.

A few months ago, to my great concern, my local nursery stopped carrying it
and couldn't explain why, exactly, only that their distributor no longer
had it. I found some at Home Depot, which was identical to the stuff I used
to use until about a month ago when the consistency seemed to change. As
you mention, it had a higher than normal sawdust-y looking component and
was reddish-brown instead of the normal grey-black. I gave up and didn't go
back for more.

Did the original company sell its name to an inferior imitation?

I still wish I could find the older formula.
