I have a rose that consistantly produces nice rosehips, and last fall I coddled
two hips to prevent them from being eaten by deer etc, and left them on the
stalk until the snow was about to bury it (mid January). I live near Ottawa,
Canada, so winters here are very cold and snowy.
Anyway, I cut the seed pods off, brought them indoors (they were black by now)
and after they were dry, I cut it open and took out the seeds, allowing them to
dry.
Now I have about 40 seeds, and I know that they will not be anything like the
parent plant (I don't even know what it is as it was here when we bought the
house) but I would love to see what they turn into.
My question is how do I plant these seeds to ensure they germinate and grow
well? What potting medium should I use? How moist should they be kept? What
temp should they grow in?

He talks about the entire breeding process but if you'll scroll down toward the
bottom of the page he tells how he plants and cares for his seeds and
seedlings.
It inspired me to save a few hips this year. They are still chilling, but I
hope to get at least one seedling. Not that I want to hybridize roses, but I
think it would be fun to see what kind of rose might sprout.

How well does it work to self-pollinate roses?
