INDIA GENETICALLY Ready to realese MODIFIED Protato
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/1...tart.html?pg=7
Biochemists in India have come up with a first in genetically modified organisms: patent-free seeds. The transgenic crop produces potatoes packed with 30 percent more protein (thus its name, the "protato") and increased amounts of amino acids. If all goes well in final health tests, Indian farmers will harvest protatoes by year's end, and the government will distribute them as a cheap and easy source of nutrients. The scientists, including Subhra Chakraborty (pictured), work at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. They hope the seeds will start a bioengineering trend of researchers suspending their intellectual property rights to share findings with peers and make progress more quickly. - Eric Steuer "Torsten Brinch" wrote in message ... INDIA GENETICALLY MODIFIED SEED FAILS, ADDING TO POOR FARMERS' BURDEN DHUMNAGAR, India (UCAN) -- At least 500,000 farmers have been left in the lurch in eastern India after the failure of a crop of genetically modified maize. |
