"QUALITY"

Is like buying oats! If you want nice, clean oats, you must pay a fair
price; however if you can be satisfied with oats that have already been
through the horse - that comes a little cheaper!!"

Sign on a dish I have and I always used that philosophy when I was running
my businesses. That is why I always had repeat business and it will pay you
to shop locally and 'pay the price for quality'

The problem with that is that you don't know how good the quality will
be unless someone has first hand experience of it and there are
hundreds of places online. I would recommend Peter Beales for roses, or
David Austin, for example. As to shrubs, it depends what kind you want
and palm trees aren't cheap anywhere, assuming you do mean palm trees
and not cordylines. Whereabouts do you live? Someone here might be
able to direct you to a place nearby that is reasonably priced. On the
whole, nurseries are less expensive than garden centres. In the
meantime, type into Google the name of the shrubs you want to find and
see which come out as having the best price and the best service - at
least on the face of it. For alpines, there are specialist alpine
nurseries and there is an Alpine Society which may be able to advise
you. You could also get hold of the Yellow Book from the RHS which is
the guide to gardens opening to the public throughout the year. Many
of those have plant sales areas which might help your search. Look at
your local paper for such events, too and also ask for cuttings from
friendly gardening neighbours.
