Default chimonanthus praecox pruning

I have a chimonanthus praecox against a fence which flowers successfully
every year - it's just finishing now. What I'm not too happy about is
its very leggy and disorganised habit with big gaps between branching.
Is there a way of persuading it to be a bit more compact? I guess I'm
thinking pruning once it's finished flowering?
