Can 8 foot tall Black Bamboo be successfully
grown in pots?

Yes, they market them like that.
However, bamboos don't really like pots. They're not
very good at coping with dry conditions, so if you let the
pot dry out, the leaves will curl and may even fall off.
So you need to provide some sort of irrigation system to prevent
this. And most people find it much easier not to grow them
in pots.

Yes it can and will thrive if you pay attention to watering and feeding.
Use a large pot -even for a small plant and ensure good drainage but never
allow the plant to dry out. Feed regularly with a high nitrogen fertiliser
and the occasional balanced feed.

I use pelleted chicken manure which seems to be available at most Garden
Centres.
