Pay to receive spam in US!

I thought this one was a windup but no.... In the US, spammers can
now legally call your mobile and YOU pay for the call! What the ****
is the matter with these Yanks?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject: DO NOT CALL LIST

JUST A REMINDER...8 days from today, all cell phone numbers are being
released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale
calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.... To prevent this, call
the
following number from your cell phone:
888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take
a minute of your time.
It blocks your number for five (5) years.

Incredible. And you cannot stop it even by calling the number
suggested. From that website's FAQ:-
"
29. If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will
it stop all telemarketing calls?

No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop
most telemarketing calls, but not all. Because of limitations in the
jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political
organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be
permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an
existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided
express agreement in writing to receive their calls.

No, it's not. US mobile owners pay to listen to telemarketing calls, just
like all other calls. Unlike the system in the UK where you pay a
different rate to call a mobile the US charge the same for mobiles and
landlines but the reciever pays to receive the call if they're using a
mobile.

No, it isn't. The imminent release of a cellphone directory may be
untrue, but the existance of the "Don't Call" directory, the fact that
US mobile customers pay for incoming calls, and the government website
referred to are all true.

It isn't quite an urban myth. In the US, you do pay to receive calls on
your cell phone.

It is illegal for telemarketers to call mobiles, but I suspect that is about
as difficult to enforce there as it is to enforce telemarketing regulations
here.

The core of his post - that they are paying to recieve spam if they don't
sign up the scheme - is false.

So what is the difference between that and UK receiving, for example,
unsolicited "Jokes" on their mobiles for which they have to pay?

It is only possible for that to happen if you have *asked* to receive
the "service". IOW they may not be sent unsolicited. The acceptance
is usually tacked onto the end of the conditions you agree to if
requesting a "free" ringtone, game or picture for your mobile, and so
it catched out lots of children.
