Downy mildew on grapevines
 

Judith was asking in another thread if a spray called Vitex still exists for
us on vines with mildew. It's not one I know of and neither does Ray. But
apparently there's something rather new called Benthiavalicarb which is used
for this. What it's marketing name is, I don't know but it might be worth
asked a nursery that deals a lot in grapevines, such as Read's. The herb
Vitex is Agnus Castus and seems to be a sort of herbal Viagra! ;-)

wants?

I saw some Vitex "Bordeaux Mixture" the other day, is that what Judith
wants?

most toxic and persistent pesticide in common use, just
because it is 'traditional'."

It's a fungicide not a pesticide. Persistant in that the copper sticks
around for a long time and is cumulative. There is not a lot of difference
between Bordeaux mixture and the other still availale compound Cheshunt.

It is, where did you see it Bob?


In one of our local Garden Centres, probably put away now Christmas
decorations are everywhere. If you have a decent GC near you, ask them, they
may well have some somewhere, if not Vitax then someone elses make.

Don't mention it I wasn't sure until you queried it.
I quoted a scientist so I assumed he knew more than us. :-)
I'd like to know if copper is safe or not, the Dutch at one time banned
copper
antifouling on boats on inland waterways, because they said it was unsafe to
let it get into the ground water.

Yebut I am a (or was) a scientist and these sorts of things I thought I knew
about:-(
Bordeaux and cheshunt are both copper based fungicides.I use the latter on
seedlings to prevent damping off and other nasties. I believe that it's OK
to use cheshunt for this purpose but not as an antifungal spray on plants.
The rules appear to vary and AFAIK the French still use vast amounts of
Bordeaux on vines.
As I mentioned before, Copper is cumulative and if I was veg gardening then
I would prefer not to use it. I think last time the group discussed this
matter we worked out that you would need to eat a lot of copper contaimnated
veg before you excedded the recommended levels.

The only garden centres in Norwich that carries stock of sundries are
Notcutts and Taverham Garden Centre. Notcutts are expensive but
Teverham Garden Centre are, I think, good value for money. I shall
take a look there next Wednesday as they have a brilliant Christmas
display of potted plants which will survive on my patent's grave.
