Default Grapefruit seedling - weird excrescences.

I planted a couple of grapefruit seeds that had started to germinate in the
fruit. At about 12" or so, one of them looked decidedly unhealthy with some
die-back. There were also numerous resinous-looking excrescences on the
stem shaped a bit like toothpaste being squeezed from the tube.
Has anyone any idea what could cause these?
Graham
