Default Shrubs dying??

We have had 2 variagated shrubs in large pots on our patio for the last
2/3 years, and after the monsoon rains we had upto the end of July, we
now have had no rain for 2 weeks, which caused me to water all the
potted plants over the last few days.

One of the shrubs in question has looked a bit on the tired side for a
while now, with the leaves drooping. Now both shrubs are starting to
lose their leaves, which have or going very yellow now.

is this because of too much water, monsoon rains, or letting to go dry,
after the rains???

Thanks
