The Gradens on Madeira
We visited Madeira whilst on a cruise in the early part of the year and
missed out on visiting the Gardens, so when we called in recently whilst cruising on Cunard's new Queen Victoria, we took the Cable Car to the top and were confronted with a conundrum. We thought, along with many others, that there was only one 'Gardens' at the top. No. The Tropical Gardens are near the top of the Cable Car, to visit the Botanical Gardens, one has to take another Cable Car back halfway down!! So if you are visiting Madeira and wish to visit the BOTANICAL GARDENS, approach it from the bottom, possibly by Taxi, and save time and money :-)) Thought someone might like to know that :-) Mike -- www.rnshipmates.co.uk for ALL Royal Navy Association matters www.rneba.org.uk. Cruising has now become so popular that we have to book well over a year in advance to secure decent cabins :-( This last one on Queen Victoria was planned well over 2 years ago because I wanted 5 Staterooms. I took all the Family with me to celebrate Christmas, our Golden Wedding and the New Year. Far be it for me to defend Mike, but this time the subject was gardens in Madeira, and it has given rise to Charlie's answer listing other gardens and their location. Had he been extolling the virtues of cruses then it would have been right off topic. I consider the way that most cruses are structured the participants are just a glorified bunch of day trippers. I consider the way that most cruses are structured the participants are just a glorified bunch of day trippers. Agreed with the proviso that it gives you a chance to see many places with the advantage of 'only unpacking once'. It is for this reason that we cruise and have the added advantage of 'returning' to places again and again. I clearly stated that I was in Madeira earlier in the year and missed things. I was able to return and 'saw things'. hen we did the World Cruise in 2006 we visited Australia on 3 very brief stops and New Zealand on one. Next Winter we fly to New Zealand and have a visit, then cruise more of New Zealand and cruise to Australia. We then fly/tour parts of Australia 'we wish to see', which includes more than a 'lightening' visit to Sydney before flying home. But then the real thing is the on-board life, and not the brief stops . A bit of an off-topic story... with the caveat that I am NOT a world traveler, having done most of my travel all expenses paid many years ago courtesy of the U.S. Navy! In 2000, my dear wife took us on a cruise to Hawaii.... lots of stuff to see; not enough time to see it all. But I especially loved Kaua'I for its relative lack of touristyness. Sadly, she passed away the next year. Soooo.... a couple of years later when I felt like living again, I found a Bed and Breakfast on that island, rented a car, and just spent a couple of weeks bumming around, taking all the time I wanted so grok the sights. The National Tropical Botanical Garden is just spectacular, especially so when you've got all day to wander around, and Limahuli Gardens on the north shore (where I stayed) specializes in native plants and a nice view of Makana Mountain, which played a movie role as "Bali Hai" some years ago. Oh, and little local altars in the lava, with recent offerings to the local Deities; I paid my respects to Pele, though She has long since moved to the newer land with active volcanoes. Locally, there's not much to do but watch the dormant plants and hope the Kale makes it through winter to set seed next summer. And clean a whole bunch of seed heads, currently in paper shopping bags in the closet. And watch the wheel of the stars march across the sky, reminding me that spring is out there somewhere!
